Purpose of Fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are portable or movable devices, intended for extinguishing of small fire areas, by means of discharging in a rapid stream of special substances, having strongly expressed fire-extinguishing properties.

Device structure

A portable fire extinguisher is, usually, produced in the form of a cylindrical container of red color, having a locking device of press type and a nozzle. Big industrial fire extinguishers are, in additionally completed with a pressure gauge, a connecting tube for management of a nozzle direction and wheels for more mobility.

How does the fire extinguisher work?

All fire extinguishers work in the same way. In order to make the fire extinguisher work, you should pull the locking device out and press it with force. Then, under high pressure, extinguishing agent, capable of putting out a flame, is released as a dense stream through a nozzle. It should be remembered that the fire extinguisher starts working right after opening of the locking device, that is why its nozzle should be directed towards the fire in advance.

Types of fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers differ in the way of fire extinguishing mixture formation, as well as the chemical composition of the substances it consists of. Thus, the most widespread types are:

• Carbon Dioxide
• Dry Powder
• Water and Foam

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are applied for putting out of fire on materials, that can burn without oxygen access, and also in case of fire on currently operating electric installations with voltage up to 1000V. It is recommended for usage as firefighting primary means for gas stations, paint and varnish productions. They are not effective, when it comes to extinguishing of wooden constructions.

Dry powder fire extinguishers are intended for localization of combustion source of flammable liquids and products of oil processing. They are obligatory for use as emergency firefighting equipment for all transport types.

Water and foam fire extinguishers work on the basis of water and alkaline solution. While operating, it produces a steady foam stream, which is used to put out various firm, and well combustible materials, that are on fire. This type of equipment is recommended for extinguishing of warehouses, archives and wooden constructions.
